What will happen in Sharp Objects on HBO?
A synopsis from HBO reads: “Based on the book of the same name by The New York Times bestselling author Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Dark Places), this eight-episode series tells the story of reporter Camille Preaker (played by Amy Adams) who returns to her small hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.
“Trying to put together a psychological puzzle from her past, she finds herself identifying with the young victims a bit too closely.”
Speaking on CBS This Morning, author Flynn explained: “It’s 12 years to get to the screen for this one.”
She said that when she first pitched the novel to publishers, there was little interest in the hard-hitting story.
“They were not beating down my door, let’s put it that way. We heard a lot of, ‘People don’t want to read about women like this. People don’t want to read about women they can’t root for, who aren’t heroic.’
“To me, I think Camille is very heroic character because I think sometimes if you’re in a lot of psychological pain and you’ve been through a lot of psychological damage, the most heroic thing you can do is keep your head above water - and that’s what Camille does again and again, every single day.”
Director Jean-Marc Vallee, who also helmed Big Little Lies, revealed that he ended up working on both projects back-to-back over the course of two year.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about approaching Sharp Objects, he explained: “It was there, it was on the page, before I started to work. I gotta give credit to Gillian Flynn, who wrote such a singular, dark story.
“And sometimes there's beauty in the darkness and we get to care for this woman, strangely, as we turn the pages.”
