How to watch The Haunting of Hill House online
The Haunting of Hill House is streaming exclusively on Netflix[1].
All 10 of the 50-minute episodes of the modern-day reimagining of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House will be released on Netflix at midnight California time (Pacific Daylight Time) on Friday, October 12.
Due to the time difference, the series will be arriving on UK Netflix at 8am British Summer Time on October 12.
As well as allowing you to binge The Haunting of Hill House over the weekend, Netflix also lets subscribers download episodes for offline viewing on selected devices.
Viewers who have not previously subscribed to Netflix can get 30 days free viewing to watch the new series and thousands of other films and TV shows.
After that, users can then choose between Netflix’s three subscription packages.
These are basic, which allows you to watch on one screen at a time for £5.99 a month, standard which offers two screens and HD streaming at £7.99 a month, and premium, which offers four screens and Ultra HD for £9.99 a month.
What will happen in The Haunting of Hill House?
The Haunting of Hill House director Mike Flanagan (who also directed Netflix’s Stephen King adaptation Gerald’s Game) has called this series his “remix” of the iconic novel.
Whereas the book features a paranormal investigator staying in the house originally owned by the long-dead Hugh Crain, the TV series tells the story of the character (played by Timothy Hutton/Henry Thomas) and his family as they live in the house and uncover its secrets.
The story alternates between two timelines, showing the lives of the Crain family when they all lived in the house together and their subsequent lives as they’ve all grown older and struggled to deal with the trauma of what they experienced in Hill House.
This means that all of the Crain family with one exception are played by two different actors.
Hugh, a property developer, is married to architect Olivia (Carla Gugino), and they plan to renovate the house and sell it on.
They have five children: Steven (Paxton Singleton/Michiel Huisman), Shirley (Lulu Wilson/Elizabeth Reaser), Theo (McKenna Grace/Katie Siegel), Luke (Julian Hilliard/Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and Nell (Violet McGraw/Victoria Pedretti).
Olivia is only played by one actress because she dies in the earlier timeline in just one of the traumatic events that happened to the Crain family.
This trauma also leads to Luke becoming a heroin addict, Shirley becoming an undertaker with a fascination with the macabre and to Steven writing a bestselling book called The Haunting of Hill House.
