He dribbles; he passes; she shoots; they score! Cheerleaders go crazy! Imagine a basketball game where the atmosphere is positive, parents cheer for every player, coaches and referees work together and encourage each other instead of yelling, every child gets equal playing time in each game and an opportunity to start at least two games throughout the season, regardless of their skill level, and the cheerleaders cheer for both teams.

Too good to be true? That's the reality of Upward Basketball and Cheerleading, a unique sports program being sponsored by First Baptist Church of Georgetown. Regular registration is open now through Thursday, Nov. 14 for boys and girls age 4 by Sept. 1, 2019 through sixth grade. Parents may come by the office of First Baptist Church at 219 Cleland St. between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to register their children. Also, convenient online registration and payment is now available online at upward.fbcgeorgetown.org.

"Nearly 200 children from all over the County participated in in Upward Basketball and Upward Cheerleading," says Jay Holmes, Minister of Music at First Baptist and member of the Upward Steering Committee. "On any given Saturday, we had hundreds of people pass through our gym. Not only did they get to see some great basketball and enjoy spirited cheerleading, but they all heard and inspirational evangelistic Gospel presentation at the halftime of each game."

Besides players and cheerleaders, Upward Basketball and Cheerleading utilizes scores of youth and adult volunteers as coaches, referees, score keepers, time keepers, concession workers, and team parents. There will also be dozens of persons praying throughout the season for Upward. Anyone from the community who would be interested in serving as a coach or referee should call the church office (843-546-5187) or contact Matt or Colby Moore, basketball and cheerleading commissioners. First Baptist will provide training required for all coaches and referees.

The cost of registration for each sport is $450; discounts are available for families with multiple children participating. This includes a reversible jersey, car magnet, t-shirt (basketball), pom-poms and megaphone (cheerleading), individual awards after each practice and game, and special end-of-the-season award. Matching shorts (basketball) and mock turtlenecks (cheerleading) may be ordered for additional $12 each.

All basketball players must attend an evaluation session and cheerleaders must be sized for uniforms in the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church on one of the following dates:

Saturday, November 9: 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon

Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday, Nov. 11, 12, 14: 5:30-7 PM

K-4 and K-5 teams are co-ed; all other grade levels are divided between boys and girls. Players will be notified of their team and coaches by Christmas. Practices will begin the week of January 6 and games will be held on Saturdays for seven weeks beginning January 25.

"One thing parents like about Upward Basketball and Cheerleading is that each team or squad is assigned a one-hour practice time at a day and time that is consistent throughout the season, plus games are usually within the same two-hour time span for each league on Saturdays," said Holmes. "This really helps families in planning their schedules."

Holmes emphasized that the church would love to have as many children as possible to participate in Upward Basketball and Upward Cheerleading.

"We want every child in our community to have the opportunity to play Upward Basketball or to cheer. We strongly encourage parents to get their children signed up and evaluated as soon as possible." Holmes also stressed that evaluations are not try-outs. "No child will be turned away; this is simply a process of evaluating each player's skill level so that teams will be as balanced as possible.

This makes the games more fun for everyone, because a child with be matched up with a player on the other team that is very close to his or her skill level It gives every child an equal opportunity for participation and improvement."
