Young Madisonville athletes began youth football and cheer practice last week at the Junior High School and are working towards their season opener as a part of the Heart of Texas Football organization.

The kids will be broken up into three teams for the season. Ages 5-7 will compete in the Bantam division while 8-9 year-olds compete in Jr's and 10-12 year-olds compete in the Seniors division.

The league's board includes President Lee Juarez, who is also the President of the Heart of Texas Football, Vice President Ruben Garza, Treasurer and Secretary D'Anna Garza and board members Brian McCloud and Nefeteria Davis.

The league is till looking for more board members to join. Anyone interested in encouraged to contact any of the board members or attend a practice.

There is also still an opportunity for kids to join football or cheer. Practices are already under way, but they will accept late signups. It costs $100 to signup for football and $125 for cheerleading.

The fee includes all of the equipment needed for the season. The football players will receive their pads and helmets this week and uniforms will be ordered later in the month.

While the schedule is still being finalized, the first game for the teams will take place on Sept. 7. It is not clear whether or not the game will be home or away, but they will play four of each during the regular season. Home games will be played at Mustang Stadium.

The Bantam games will take place at 9 a.m., followed by Jr's at 10:30 a.m. and Seniors at noon.

The coaches for Madisonville youth football are Lee Juarez, Darren Grimm and Scotty Porter for Bantam, Ruben Garza and Josh Smith for Jr's and Otis Morten and Donald Schweter for Seniors.

Each head coach was required to participate in USA Football training, which focuses on heat exhaustion and concussion training.

The cheerleaders are coached by Ashley Dommert and will be broken up appropriately when the numbers are finalized.

The league will be participating in a number of fundraisers this season, including selling squares on t-shirts for $50 apiece. The shirts will be distributed at home games.
