Pop Warner Cheerleaders Head to Nationals - Milford LIVE For the first time, Milford Pop Warner Junior PeeWee Squad Cheerleaders are heading to the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships scheduled for December 9 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World. The cheerleaders are currently working to raise money so that all members of the squad can attend. The Junior PeeWee Squad Cheerleaders are between the ages of eight and eleven.

"It will cost $675 per cheerleader to go to Nationals," Kristy Wisel of Pop Warner Cheerleading said. "We want every one of the cheerleaders who helped us get this far go to Nationals so we need some community help. This kind of money right before Christmas is just out of reach for some of our members."

The Pop Warner Cheerleaders had to win at both the Henlopen Conference and Regional Competitions in order to get to Nationals. At the events, they performed Level 3 Skills and were selected as a team that would advance to the national competition in Florida.

"Members have worked hard to make sure no one gets left behind," Wisel said. "We have held bake sales, tag days, walking through and knocking on doors in neighborhoods as well as requesting community and personal donations to help everyone go to the competition. It is important that everyone who competed at Henlopen and Regionals get to go and help us win at Nationals."

Cheerleading provides many important skills, Wisel explained. The children who participate learn team-building skills while also developing important social connections and relationships. Because cheerleading can be very physical, it also incorporates strength training and physical endurance. Sportsmanship is also an important part of cheerleading.

"It is also physically challenging," Wisel said. "It requires participants  to focus, improves their coordination and helps them become more athletic. The sport also teaches discipline and mental focus."

Milford Pop Warner is a non-profit organization that provides youth football and cheer programs to Milford area children. Through the organization, young people learn a respect for education in order to develop into strong, smart, responsible and healthy members of the community. Pop Warner is run completely by volunteers and funded through registration fees, sponsors and fundraisers. Any funds raised are put back into the organization for expenses that may include repair and replacement of uniforms, fees to use fields, payment to officials, insurance, entrance fees and more.

Anyone who wishes to donate toward the National cheerleading competition can contact Milford Pop Warner by emailing the president at milfordpopwarner@gmail.com to learn more.
