I remember very distinctly my favorite denim skirt from the mid-aughts. It was distressed and pleated like a cheerleader uniform and it had a raw hem whose fray invited my grandpa to remark disapprovingly, "I hope you didn't pay full price for that." It was just short enough to get me a dress code violation at school, which involved at least one tear-inducing visit to the principal's office, but I loved that thing to pieces.
While I'm not necessarily looking to invest in denim cheerleader pleats again, I am absolutely ready to make the denim skirt a personal wardrobe staple. I recently picked up an upcycled version made entirely of old jeans waistbands from a thrift store that I'm obsessed with, but I'd also be happy with a more minimal, streamlined version like this one from vintage Levi's upcycling label Re/Done. Whether worn with a T-shirt, fanny pack and sneakers in the city or a swimsuit and newly cool again flip-flops at the beach, a denim skirt is just about the easiest way to get dressed for summer. Me and my teenage nostalgia want in.
