BERNARDSTON – Pratt's Field was bustling with children and their families as they partook in carnival games and competitions for the first ever "Family Fun Day" this weekend.
"The kids had a great time," said Amy Bernard, who was at Family Fun Day with her three granddaughters.
Hosted by the Recreation Department, "Family Fun Day" saw cars arriving at the field throughout most of the afternoon. Recreation Department Chair Jennifer Stennis said she was pleased with the turnout for the first-time event.
"We really tried to get everyone in town involved," Stennis said.
The day began with a bike parade from the Bernardston Police Station, across the street from the park, to the baseball field where the events were based. Families were welcome to get their face painted, play corn-hole or hop through the obstacle course between pre-scheduled events.
The recreation department had a dunk-tank on site which, on the hot day, quickly became one of the more popular activities after the Bernardston Fire Department filled it.
While the cheerleaders were originally the volunteers for the dunk-tank, Stennis said many children asked for permission to get soaked themselves after working up a sweat in the home-run derby, three-legged races and kickball game.
The Recreation Department partnered with local vendors, the Bernardston Senior Center and the Kiwanis Club of Bernardston to organize the day. Each set up their own tents on site. The Kiwanis club was grilling hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries while the Bernardston Cheerleaders sold snow-cones and snacks.
The cheerleaders surprised the residents in attendance with a flash mob dance, which doubled as a sneak peak of their full routine, said Stennis, who also serves as the head coach for the cheerleaders.
"They've been practicing for three weeks now," Stennis said. "We're getting ready to perform at Scarecrow in the Park in the fall."
Vendor partners for Saturday included: Paulas' Perennials from Bernardston, Salsa Sisters from Brattleboro, VT, Chainmaille by Brad Hendricks from Leverett, Severance Maple Products from Northfield, Mon Artistic Pet Products from North Adams and more.
Stennis said she was hopeful the event would be able to expand next year.
