DUBLIN — West Bladen High School is dealing with the aftermath of a Thursday fire that rendered its gym floor destroyed.
There was no major structural damage, said Travis Pait, the school's athletic director.
"Looks like sparks caught a mat on fire," Pait said. "There's a huge place in the middle of the floor. The custodian got to it before it became a major structure fire."
The gym was being used for a cheerleader camp.
Pait described the damaged area as roughly between where the hash marks are on each end of the floor length-wise, and width-wise about the same as the jump circle at midcourt — somewhat rectangular matching a floor mat used for tumbling.
"The playing surface is bad," Pait said.
Summer league games scheduled for Friday will not be played. Pait said it is early in the decision-making process about a resolution for the repair.
