WESTFIELD, NJ - The Jerzey Jewels Sapphires Cheer Competition Team took home gold from the U.S Finals Cheerleading Championship competition on May 4 in Rhode Island.
"It was a very exciting day for us at U.S. Finals, Rhode Island Convention Center," said Sofia Sorvino, a 13-year-old flyer on the team.
The US Finals Gold is the culmination of the year's competitions resulting in the best of the best battling for gold in their division, officials said. The squad also earned zero deductions, meaning they quite literally made no mistakes.
This is the fourth time this season Sapphires received zero deductions. The team also competed with the coveted gold laces in their shoes which they were awarded when winning and receiving the gold bid at the DC event Battle at the Capital.
Jerzey Jewelz Cheer Sapphires Team competed in the Level Senior Prep 1.1 division. Competing were teams from New Jersey, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania.
The JJ Sapphires team took home zero deductions from their routine, they won Grand Champions, highest score in prep and novice division, and took home a paid Gold bid qualifying the team for US Finals Cheer Nationals.
The team also took home the white jackets given only to division champs.
The JJ Sapphires also competed April 29 at Hershey Park and earned one of only two bids to compete in Disney World in 2020.
The team, also known as the Great 8, ends its season undefeated.
The gym, Jerzey Jewels, has never had an undefeated team in its history.
