People's Vote cheerleader Alastair Campbell torn apart over relentless anti-Brexit battle - Express.co.uk

August 30, 2019 at 03:40AM

Speaking on Channel 4 News, the former Tony Blair spin doctor was confronted on whether he would prefer a no deal Brexit scenario over an exit agreed upon a formal deal with the EU. Mr Campbell, adamant of his conviction there is still time to prevent the UK from leaving the Brussels bloc, promptly vowed he would never stop fighting Brexit. He said: "I'll keep fighting. We'll keep fighting."

But as Channel 4 News host Matt Frei mocked the former Labour member claiming he would be "shouting in the wilderness", Mr Campbell claimed his tactics had worked for his aim of ousting Theresa May from Number 10.

He said: "No, it's not shouting in the wilderness.

"It wasn't shouting in the wilderness when Theresa May said we were going to be out by March the 29th.

"And she is now the one who is out."

Commenting on Boris Johnson's decision to prorogue Parliament in order to prevent MPs from putting forward legislation aimed at stopping a no deal scenario, Mr Campbell added: "This is not the act of somebody who is confident.

"It's the act of somebody who is weak and scared of both the public and the MPs."

It comes as the Prime Minister decided to prorogue Parliament between October 11 and October 14, therefore, prolonging the parliamentary conference recess by four days.

Boris Johnson claims the move is aimed at presenting new legislation to Parliament over future plans for the NHS and the Government's fight against crime.

But MPs have criticised the decision as a way to prevent Parliament to pass legislation against a no deal Brexit outcome.

Mr Johnson has been accused of "dictatorship" by SNP leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Whilst others in the House of Commons have condemned the decision as "death to democracy".

Remainers are plotting to block the Prime Minister's plans by filing urgent legal challenges across the UK.

The first was filed in Edinburgh, just hours after the move was announced and Remainers hope the case will reach the Supreme Court.

Other staunch Remainers have opted to launch their own challenges to Mr Johnson's Brexit plot, with Gina Miller filling a separate challenge in London on Wednesday.

The 54-year-old businesswoman hopes the courts will hear her case before Parliament is suspended on September 12. She said the move was "cynical and cowardly", and argued that it isn't right to stop lawmakers sitting when that would "frustrate Parliament and fetter it from exercising its sovereign right" to enact laws.

The European Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt also attacked Mr Johnson's decision, tweeting: "'Taking back control' never looked so sinister."
