Lisa Robbins, a kindergarten teacher at Lincoln K-8 School in Rochester, is the Post Bulletin teacher of the month for March.
Lisa grew up in Coon Rapids. She and her husband, Craig, have three children, Chris, Sam (and wife Laura) and Kelly (and fiance Jon).
What's the best or favorite part of your day?
The best parts of my day are all of the interactions with the students: their excitement during "aha" moments when they learn something new, as well as the hugs, greetings, and the important stories from their lives that they can't wait to share with me.
What or who inspired you to become a teacher?
I have much younger siblings. I helped take care of them when they were young and enjoyed watching them learn and grow. About that same time, I had a sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Koskinen, who made me feel empowered as a learner and helped me believe in myself.
What is one thing you want your students to retain from their days with you?
I want them to maintain their curiosity and love of learning along with the resilience to keep trying so they can do so even when there are obstacles in life.
Do you have a teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that all people learn throughout their lives. My role as a kindergarten teacher is to encourage and "cheerlead" so my students believe in themselves and are willing to do their work of learning. Kindergartners are like little sponges, soaking up knowledge and new experiences! I try to meet their needs as whole people and help remove barriers and/or teach them how to work around their obstacles so they can be successful.
The cooperation shown by the staff, families, and students at Lincoln K-8 is another necessary skill students will use throughout their lives. I love working in a K-8 school because I can maintain relationships and support my students long after they leave my classroom. It is an honor when students come back and let me know how they are doing in high school, college and beyond.
What is the most memorable thing that's happened in your classroom?
There isn't any one thing that sticks out. I keep learning every day since something new is always happening. Each person and group is unique and keeps me on my toes!
