Riverside golf tournament raises cash for causes of Las Vegas mass shooting victim, from cheerleading to children - Press-Enterprise
"It's been a tremendously successful event," said Julie Gomez, mother of the 20-year-old Riverside woman and nursing student.
The tournament, which is intended to become an annual fundraiser, was at the Victoria Club in Riverside.
Angela Gomez was one of 58 people who died when a gunman opened fire Oct. 1, 2017, on a crowd of 22,000 at an outdoor country music concert. A 2015 graduate of Riverside's Poly High School, she was in her third year at Riverside City College and studying nursing at the time.
Proceeds from the Angela's Wishes Inaugural Golf Tournament will benefit the Angela C. Gomez Memorial Foundation.
Julie Gomez said the foundation gives annual scholarships to one Poly High School graduating senior and an RCC nursing student. The foundation provides funding for Poly High cheerleader uniforms and Riverside Children's Theatre makeup and microphone equipment.
In December, the foundation donated toys to several children's hospitals across Southern California, Gomez said, as well as to Path of Life Ministries in Riverside for children in homeless families. By design, the charity's causes are closely linked to her daughter's life and passions.
"Her dream was to work in a children's hospital," Gomez said.
Gomez added that her daughter was captain of the high school cheer squad for two years.
She was the youngest of five children in Steve and Julie Gomez's blended family.
"My husband had two, I had two and she was ours together," Julie Gomez said. "She was always smiling, always happy."
She started dancing at the age of 2 1/2, her mother said, and performed for many years with Riverside Children's Theater.
