A pair of cheerleaders from the Commerce High School Tiger cheer squad will represent their school as part of the statewide all-star team later this summer.

Alexis Morgan and Korrighan Smith were both selected to the 1-4A Red All-Star Team by the Texas Girls Coaches Association Spirit Committee. Each year, the committee selects a maximum of 24 all-stars from divisions 1A through 4A and 24 from 5A and 6A and splits them into Red and Blue teams. These All-Stars perform at the annual TGCA All-Star Game traditionally held in July. The selections must all be juniors.

The selection is a high honor, with the pair being chosen from thousands of cheerleaders from across the state. Commerce Cheer Coach Sawyer Cunningham says that this is not something to be taken lightly.

"This really is a huge deal," Cunningam said. "It really shows the work they have put in to stand out from so many people."

Morgan says that she is very excited for the opportunity.

"We have always practiced really hard to be the best," Morgan said. "I still can't believe that it happened."

Smith, who is male, says that he is even more floored with his selection.

"Being a guy, it really means a lot to get this kind of recognition in cheerleading," Smith said. "To be picked is a real honor."

Coach Cunningham says that she is "very proud that they can represent Commerce with this opportunity."

Both Morgan and Smith are multi-sport athletes, competing in track and field, cross country and powerlifting.

The Commerce Cheer squad has received a lot of notoriety in recent years, winning the UIL Small School Co-Ed State Championship in 2017 and finishing second place in the 3A division this January.

Morgan and Smith will cheer at the TGCA All-Star Games on July 9 in Arlington.
