SUMMERTON - The town of Summerton celebrated its two state championship basketball teams on Friday, and its citizens and those from the surrounding communities turned out in droves.
The town had a victory parade to honor the Scott's Branch High School girls basketball team, which won the 1A state championship, and the Clarendon Hall boys team, the SCISA 1A state champion.
"It feels great to take part in this," said Clarendon Hall basketball player Traveon Davis. "This is a really good thing for the community."
The parade started at the old Scott's Branch High School building on Fourth Street. It turned out on to Larry King Highway, which transitioned into Main Street after crossing U.S. 15. The parade went another couple of blocks before ending.
The parade started with a color guard and was followed by two law enforcement vehicles and a Clarendon County Fire and Rescue vehicle. A trailer carrying the Clarendon Hall players and its cheerleaders followed with a trailer carrying the Scott's Branch team and its cheerleaders a couple of entries back.
The parade was done in about 15 minutes, but it is something that will be remembered for a much longer time."This is certainly a blessing to have everyone come out and celebrate," said Scott's Branch senior player Chaniya Monroe. "It's really more than what I expected. It was great to have all of these people out here.""For me, this was a tremendous thing," said Lucinda Stukes, the head coach and Scotts' branch alumnus who led the Lady Eagles to a 24-3 record. "To see all of my former classmates and teachers as well as our fans was great. Our support has been great all year."Clarendon Hall's Zyan Gilmore said the fan support has been outstanding for the Saints as well."This is about what I expected," Gilmore said of the turnout for the parade. "All season, our fans have supported us, both home and away. This was a really good thing."Clarendon Hall went undefeated, posting a 29-0 record. This came after the program entered the 2017-18 season on a 34-game losing streak."This is something that was great for the community," said CH head coach Anthony Ritenour, who led the Saints to the program's first state title just like Scott's Branch won its first girls state title. "It was great to have all of these people out celebrating the teams."
