The 1992 election for the House of Commons Speaker was hugely significant. After John Major was re-elected as Prime Minister, MPs were asked to choose a replacement for the retired Bernard Weatherill, who had presided over the House for the last nine years.

Labour backbencher Betty Boothroyd was elected after a contest between her and Peter Brooke, a Tory MP and former cabinet minister. The result was not just significant because Boothroyd was the first female Speaker, nor because it was the first such election since parliamentary proceedings had begun to be  televised.

Most importantly, this was the last time the Commons ignored party lines and affiliation and opted for the best candidate. This...
