Island CYO Cheerleading Championships 2019: St. Clare, St. Patrick's are tops in Debs division - SILive.com

St. Clare notched first place in the Debs Large Schools division in the 63rd annual Staten Island CYO Championships Saturday at the College of Staten Island.

"We are so excited for our girls, I couldn't be more proud," said coach Lauren Ackalitis, whose squad recorded 81.1 points. "When they got off the mat today I knew that they gave 110 percent. I couldn't ask for more. They always amaze me when they perform."

St. Charles took second place with 76.4 points, while Our Lady Star of the Sea (71.4) finished third and Holy Child (56.3) took fourth.

St. Clare also won the overall cheer award for the Debs division.

"They're really a great group of kids," Ackalitis added. They give me back more than I can ever give them, and I absolutely love coaching them."

The Shamrocks also did a superb job keeping their routine clean. And judging by the final scoring, they needed it to be.

In fact, St. Pat's finished with 63.8 points, only a little more than one point better than second place Our Lady Help of Christians (62.6).

"They did amazing today and their dedication and hard work paid off," said coach Michel Spano. "I've been coaching this group of girls for five years now and I love them. I like to see them go out there and have fun."

Next, Spano will start preparing her team for the CYO Archdiocesan competition on March 23.

"We're going to take all the judges comments into consideration and work to clean up the routine even more before the next competition."

Biddy division

Although there was no official scoring for the Biddy division, the young ladies more than put on a show during the second leg of Saturday's competition at CSI.
