WATERBURY — For the first time in school history, the Woodland cheerleading team will raise a banner in its home gym.
The Hawks won the co-ed division title at the Naugatuck Valley League cheerleading championships Feb. 16 at Crosby High. They outscored Naugatuck and Torrington, the other two squads competing in the co-ed division, to earn the first NVL cheerleading championship in school history.
Woodland's Meliha Otajagic was the only local cheerleader named to the All-NVL team after the competition.
Wolcott edged Seymour to win the NVL championship in the all-girls division.
Woodland and Naugatuck will compete in the co-ed division at the state championship meet Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
