IS UNBELIEVABLE BASED ON A TRUE STORY?[1]

What is Unbelievable on Netflix about?

Unbelievable on Netflix is inspired by the true story of what happened to an 18-year-old American woman in 2008.

The series source material is taken from the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning article 'An Unbelievable Story of Rape,' written by T Christian Miller, Ken Armstrong and the This American Life radio episode titled Anatomy of Doubt.

In the series Unbelievable, the victim is given the name Marie, who is played by Kaitlyn Dever.

Marie, who was living in Lynwood, Washington was raped at knifepoint by a man in the early hours of the morning.

However, the attacker was very careful, making sure he left no traces of evidence behind.

Marie reported the rape to police but was accused of false reporting and faced a year’s prison sentence if she did not take a plea deal.

Meanwhile, for almost two years, Marie’s attacker was able to roam free, carrying out more attacks on women across the United States.

Similar cases to Marie’s were reported to the police and the attacker was eventually caught by two Colorado female detectives in 2011.

The official Netflix synopsis reads: “When teenager Marie Adler (played by Kaitlyn Dever) files a police report claiming she's been sexually assaulted by an intruder in her home, the investigating detectives, as well as the people closest to her, come to doubt the truth of her story.

“Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen (Toni Colette) and Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever) meet while investigating an eerily similar pair of intruder rapes and partner to catch a potential serial rapist.”
