What will happen in Disenchantment on Netflix?
From the mind of The Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening, Disenchantment will plunge audiences into a fantasy world that’s anything but conventional.
A synopsis from Netflix reads: “In Disenchantment, viewers will be whisked away to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean (played by Abbi Jacobson), her feisty elf companion Elfo (Nat Faxon), and her personal demon Luci (Eric Andre).
“Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.”
A trailer for Disenchantment was released last month and starts off with Bean set to be tying the knot with a handsome prince but things don’t go quite to plan when she spurns her husband-to-be and leaves him impaled on an iron throne.
After fleeing from her nuptials, Bean says in voiceover: “I want to be in charge of my own destiny.”
As the teaser unfolds, Bean is seeing drinking in a tavern, being confronted by her father and flying across the sea on the back of a strange creature.
The show has the typical Groening humour with social commentary and references to other films and TV shows.
Teasing the show, creator Groening said: “People will be surprised. No matter what you think you’re gonna get, it’s going to be something different.”
He went on to say about the conception of the series: “I started re-reading a lot of old fantasy books and taking notes and trying to see if I could come up with a new universe.
“I had this dog-eared, ratty old sketchbook that I filled with ideas – I put in everything I could think of from fables and fantasy and movies and children’s books.”
Groening added: “When Netflix came along, the new way of putting every episode up at once was a really compelling way of storytelling.
“We’re used to telling stories one at a time every week, and there’s a reset at the end of each episode.
“With Disenchantment, we get to tell a giant arc of a story, along with many little arcs. It’s what medieval epic fantasy is made for.”
