AKRON, Ohio — Emma Pfouts, the 16-year-old Norton cheerleader who fell critically ill after suffering an asthma attack at her school's homecoming dance, will have surgery today at Akron Children's Hospital, according to her mother Christina Weigand.
Her mother called the surgery "life changing for her," while asking for prayers to help get Emma through the next part of her journey.

"I can remember when my dad did her bunion surgery on her foot and she would say "I'm having major surgery" & we would tease her saying, "#EMMASTRONG ," never imagining that one day #EMMASTRONG would mean so much to us," Weigand said on Tuesday.
Her mother said her condition is unknown as she "hasn't really woken up from her coma." Doctors gave MRI results to the family and have been "told the worst," according to Weigand.
Three weeks after being placed in a medically-induced coma, Emma started swallowing, moving her eyes and moving her hand, a moment that brought her family to tears.
Her family remains optimistic through an unimaginably difficult time.
"At the end of the day, we are just incredibly thankful to have Emma???? with us, in any capacity. Our love for Emma???? is and always will remain unconditional. We will care for her no matter what. She, along with us, are just blessed to have our family, friends, community, & beyond support to get us through these trying times. We will do everything we can to give Emma???? the meaningful quality of life that she deserves. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR CONTINUED PRAYERS AND SUPPORT!!????????," her mother wrote on Facebook.
