Amassing a record number of votes cast in this week's Times Athlete of the Week poll, sponsored by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, Logansport cheerleader and softball player Rylie Blount walks away with the title.
After trailing by more than 1,400 votes late Thursday afternoon, Blount and her voters bounced back to win by a mere 103 votes in the highest vote total yet for two individual competitors. Blount garnered 58,140 votes, 43.35 percent of the 134,106 votes cast, to 58,037 (43.28 percent) for Captain Shreve swimmer Karlie Key.
Blount carries a 4.10 GPA, is co-captain of the varsity cheer squad and has been a UCA All-American cheerleader for four years. As a softball player, she has been named All-District, All-Parish and to The Times All-Area team. She recently received the Honesty and Integrity award from the Masonic Lodge. In addition to sports, Blount is involved in the National Honor Society, Purple Jackets, FFA, Unstoppables and FCCLA.

The poll is posted each Monday at shreveporttimes.com with a new slate of student-athletes in high school sports other than football. Each weekly winner receives an "Athlete of the Week" backpack, courtesy of The Times, the SBSC and BSN Sports.
Key, the daughter of Kelly and Michelle Key, is a three-time LHSAA state qualifier in the 100 back and breaststrokes and hopes to bring home some hardware from the upcoming state meet. She has finished fourth at state in past meets in both disciplines. She and her teammates broke the 200-medley short course record this year. In addition to carrying a 4.6 GPA, Key is involved in Student Council, Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society at Shreve.
"It has been a pleasure coaching Karlie these past two years," Lady Gators coach Michael Diffie said. "She is always working hard in and out of the pool. To see her so focused on being a great swimmer and to hold that level of academics is a true testament to her work ethic. I can't wait to see what the future holds for her."
Also on the Week 9 ballot were Avian Smith (North Webster cheerleading), Trent Wells (Byrd cross country), Gabriel Cole (Airline cross country), Caroline Horne (Calvary swimming), Madison Collins (Parkway volleyball), Mia McWilliams (Haughton volleyball), Kaitlyn Masters (Benton volleyball) and Peyton Turner (Caddo Magnet volleyball).
They were chosen due to their efforts during the past week or because their names were submitted by their coach.
The Times online only poll runs through Thursday midnight. The poll includes northwest Louisiana athletes competing in volleyball, cross country, swimming and cheerleading for the fall.
