At the half-way point of the season, the Dawson County competitive cheerleaders' varsity squad remained undefeated on Oct. 5 after collecting their third trophy of the year in the Buford Cheer Classic at Arena. In addition to the Lady Tigers, the day-long competition featured teams from East Jackson, Franklin County, Lumpkin County, Monroe Area and Cherokee Bluff High School.
Turning in another zero-deduction performance, their third in a row, the Lady Tigers easily took the top spot. The team was flanked on the podium by East Jackson and Franklin County, who finished second and third, respectively.
As the defending regional champions, the team has worked hard to build on the program's past success according to head coach Kim Fleming, but she acknowledged that there was still some work to be done as the team prepares for the final push towards the regional and state tournaments.
"We are now taking sections of the routine and cleaning it to get better execution scores. We have the difficulty in our routine, so we are now working on how we execute the routine," Fleming said. "We just keep perfecting the routine to get prepared for region and state competition."
The junior varsity squad found themselves in a difficult position in Buford as they competed with much larger teams from regions 6- and 7-A. Despite the difference in classification, the JV Lady Tigers out-performed half of their opponents, posting their third zero-deduction routine of the season to finish fifth in the field of eleven teams.
"JV was in an extremely tough division. They competed against all 6A and 7A schools," Fleming said. "They were the small team in size and from the smallest classification. … We were extremely proud of their performance."
The teams remain on the road but will be the closest to home that they have been all season on Oct. 12 when they compete at North Hall High School. The junior varsity squad kicks-off the competition at 10:00 a.m., followed by the varsity routines beginning at 10:30 a.m.
