Polk County's varsity cheerleaders leapt in a new direction on Saturday, taking part in the Mountain Regional PreState competition at Enka High School.

School officials say it marks the first time that Polk County has fielded a competitive cheer squad – and the Wolverines made the most of the day, finishing second to Eastern Guilford in the Medium Varsity Non-Tumble division.

"These girls have worked hard since August to perfect their routine and we are proud of the accomplishment," said PCHS cheer coach Elisa Flynn.
