Canadian Football League cheerleaders, past and present, will be energizing BMO Field for a great cause on Saturday.
About 100 cherleaders will be raising funds and awareness for breast cancer on Pink Day as the Argos take on the Ottawa Redblacks. The ladies, representing nine CFL teams, a few going back to the pre-war Argos and the original Ottawa Rough Riders, will be on the field before the game and in the stands during play sporting pink clothing and ribbons.
Saturday's gathering will also serve as a reunion for the new CFL Cheerleaders Alumni Organization.
"A number of women in the CFCAO have been affected by various forms of cancer," said Elizabeth Morgan, co-director of the Argos cheerleading Alumni, which includes the 1959-64 Argoettes and the Argo Sunshine Girls of the '80s and cancer survivor Dawn Maracle of the CFCAO. "We want to empower women and our peers who have had to deal with these experiences or with someone in their families."
The CFCAO amalgamated the various groups of past cheerleaders in the CFL this season with the goal of more helping more fundraising causes, marketing and discussing common life issues. There are plans to contact cheerleaders from the CFL's defunct American teams from the '90s and form an alliance with NFL cheerleaders, Morgan being a former member of the Buffalo Jills.
