Another flawless performance by Dawson County cheerleaders - Dawson Community News

The Dawson County competitive cheerleading teams traveled to Hoschton, Georgia on Sept. 28 for their second tournament of the season, the Mill Creek Choose Happy Cheerleading Classic and, once again, both the varsity and junior varsity teams turned in a flawless routine.

For the Lady Tigers varsity squad, the zero-deduction performance was enough to capture their second first-place trophy of the season, while the junior varsity finished just slightly behind region 7-A Lambert High School in second place.

"The varsity team added more tumbling in standing and running tumbling sections of the routine. They also added am inversion lift into their elite stunt sequence," varsity head coach Kim Fleming said. "The additions seemed to help. Our score went up nine points from the first competition."

Having graduated five seniors in 2019, the varsity squad has relied on a large contingent of cheerleaders elevated from last year's junior varsity squad and have relied on the leadership of their sole senior Chloe Harper.

"I've kind of been the only one all four years… the only freshman, the only sophomore, the only junior, so it's not really that big a deal," Harper said. "Having that experience has really helped, and I think it is going to be a really good year."

Part of the reason for the program's continued success stems from the coaching philosophy of junior varsity coach Stephanie Moore, whose goal is to ensure that every member of her team is ready to step up to the next level when called upon.

"The goal this year for junior varsity is to develop the foundational skills need to move up to the varsity level," Moore said. "Our routine is always developing, in fact, we added five new elements for this weekend."

The Lady Tigers season continues on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they hit the road for the Buford Fall Classic.
