BIXBY, Okla. — When Bixby senior Trevon Holt isn't on the gridiron, he's lifting up other team members in competitive cheerleading.

"Senior year, might as well do something a little out of the ordinary," said Holt.

The receiver and safety started cheering with the co-ed varsity team over the summer.

"It's a lot of technique stuff, like you can be strong and lift a girl but you also got to know the right way to hold them," said Holt.

He originally wanted to learn to do a back flip, and now the fate of the routine lies in his hands.

"I kind of underestimated it going in, but my body definitely does hurt after that," said Holt.

His coach is familiar with balancing both sports.

"I chose to pursue cheerleading through the rest of my senior year as well as play football, I went on to cheer at the University of Oklahoma," said Kyle Kachelmeyer, Bixby Varsity Cheer Coach.

The former offensive lineman says the two sports have more on common than you think.

"I kind of understood the concept of working hard for somebody else's success as opposed to your own and that translates a lot into cheerleading we're always trying to keep people around us safe," said Kachelmeyer.

Holt says he hasn't gotten much backlash, but says it wouldn't stop him if he did.

"Don't let someone else's opinion stop you from doing something that you want to try," said Holt.

After Friday night's game against Sapulpa, Holt will head to Oral Roberts University on Saturday to compete in the cheerleading state championship.
