Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins in October, but the Dickson Upper Elementary cheerleaders are already busy raising money to help with the cause. For the next month, these fourth, fifth and sixth graders are selling special Dickson Pink Out T-shirts. They will then give all the proceeds from their sales to help one local woman in her fight against the disease.
Ashley Willis, coach of the sixth grade cheerleaders, said this is the third year they have held this fundraiser. Each year they select one woman in the community to receive the money. They have not selected who will be receiving the money this year, but Willis said the money will definitely be staying local.
The first year they donated their proceeds to a Dickson teacher who was battling the disease, and last year they chose another local woman to help.
"We were able to raise $1,000. So we had the $1,000 cash and we also made a fight basket to give to someone in our community who was battling cancer," Willis said. "We gave it to her right before Christmas, so it ended up being a kind of Christmas present. She actually passed away a couple months later, but she and her family were able to have one last really great Christmas."
This year, they hope to have a recipient in place by the time they host their Pink Out Game on Saturday, October 12. The girls will be decked out in pink for the event and Willis said they may even have a small ceremony in honor of whomever is selected — as long as the recipient is comfortable with the idea.
"The whole project is very rewarding to the girls. They love it," Willis said. "Last year we were able to give a lot more than we were the first year, so I just want to see this keep growing year after year."
