Rison, Dumas To Scrimmage Monday - Cleveland County HeraldWILDCAT COMMUNITY PEP RALLY – The Rison High School cheerleaders prepare to lead the crowd in some cheers during the Arkansas Blue Cross/Blue Shield Kickoff Classic community pep rally held last Tuesday, Aug. 6, on the courthouse lawn in Rison. The event was organized by Blue Cross/Blue Shield in anticipation of the Rison Wildcats season opener on Tuesday, Aug. 27, against the Prescott Curly Wolves at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia. In addition to the cheerleaders, Coach Clay Totty had the varsity football team on hand as well as the Rison Wildcat Marching Band. Tickets for the Kickoff Classic are available from any varsity football player. Tickets will be available at the administration building beginning this Monday, Aug. 19.

RISON – Some starting jobs may be determined this Monday evening when the Rison Wildcats journey to Dumas to take on the Class 4A Bobcats in a scrimmage game Dumas. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

With just four starters returning on offense and four/five starters on defense from a 2018 team that went 13-1 and advanced to the Class 3A semifinals, Rison Coach Clay Totty said he is still looking for starters at guard and center on offense, and one linebacker position on defense.

Offensively, junior Josh Bowen and sophomores Dalton Riggins and Arturo Hernandez are getting looks at guard while Preston Hebert and Chase Wells have been rotating at center.

Defensively, Riggins, junior Monte Barnett and Jamarien Frye are battling at linebacker. Totty said Riggins has had a solid off season and is a disciplined player who makes good reads. He said Barnett brings some experience to the table after starting some games at linebacker last year while Frye has a lot of athleticism.

Dumas will provide a good measuring stick in each of those battles as the Bobcats bring back six starters on each side of the ball from a team that went 12-2 and advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals. Dumas starts the season at no. 8 in Hooten's Arkansas Football Class 4A rankings.

The Bobcats are led by All-State dual-threat quarterback Chris Harris, who will be starting behind center for the third straight year. He and junior running back Kylin James both possess 4.5 speed on a team loaded at the skill positions.
