LAURINBURG — Pate Stadium received its newest upgrade on Wednesday night, just in time for the start of the 2019 high school football season.

A giant inflatable football helmet bearing Scotland High's logo will be set up between the football field and field house at home games. The helmet features a tunnel that the Scots will run through when making their pregame entrance. The new inflatable replaced a similar one that was around 10 years old.

Members of the Tilted Kilts tailgating group raised money to pay for the tunnel, which had a price tag of around $3,700. Chris Johnson, Jimmy Wallace and Steve Ikner spearheaded the effort with the help of several local sponsors.

"We started talking about it at the end of last year," Johnson said.

The new tunnels' predecessor was showing some wear and tear, and a replacement was necessary. Johnson said the tailgating group had one thing in mind when organizing their fundraising campaign.

"It was all for the kids," said Johnson, who graduated from Scotland High in 1991. The Tilted Kilts have been tailgating Scotland's football games ever since he graduated.

Scotland's football players and cheerleaders got their first look at the new tunnel on Wednesday night. The teams ran through their gameday entrance routines as Scotland's pregame videos played on Pate Stadium's video board. Cheerleaders were lined up to cheer on the football players as they ran through the tunnel.

The list of businesses and individuals that donated money for the new tunnel consisted of Safeway Motor Sales, Bear and Becca Hughes, Lowe's of Laurinburg, Scotland Trading Co., Charlie and Phyliss Fipps, Service Thread, General McArthur's, Eric Byrd Insurance, Scotland Wholesale, Laurinburg Auto Sales, Wade S. Dunbar Insurance, Jesse McQueen, Richard Boles Funeral Service, Hasty Realty, Norris Storage Buildings, Jimmy Roberts and First Choice Food Service.
