MINOT, N.D. - Minot High cheerleading has a rich history of winning. They are looking to defend their reputation again this year.
A lot goes into their success, but one preseason camp sets a foundation for their entire routine.
Much of the Minot High cheer team's routine relies on exciting stunts high in the air.
But they have to complete a mandatory certification training at the beginning of each year to include them in their routine.
"We know all the rules for safety, make sure we are with the new trends and that we're doing things that are exciting and fun for the kids and very safe," said Angie Speiser, the team's head adviser.
Instructors for Universal Cheerleaders Association have been with Minot High cheer teams for roughly 30 years, to not only certify the girls, but also teach them what's new in the sport.
"We talk about safety, that's our number one priority, but we also try and teach them great technique and skills. Especially for those who are just coming in who are newcomers and those who have never cheered a day in their lives," said Mia Harris, UCA head coach .
With this certification, Speiser says the team can work on advanced routines that keep them competing at a high level.
"You're learning new trends. You're always leaning new stunts that are safe. You learn all the parts and many kids can take part in it. It isn't for just five or six on the team, but everybody on the team can be involved," Speiser said.
