The Poteet High School Varsity Cheerleaders attended UCA Cheer Camp two weeks ago at Corpus Christi. The camp was hosted at the Emerald Beach Resort.

While there, the 2019- 2020 cheer squad received blue ribbons daily for their cheer and rally routine evaluations. A blue ribbon at a UCA Camp is "Superior," the highest level a squad can receive at camp.

The squad also received a spirit stick at the end of each day.

"I'm extremely proud of my squad this year. They have really worked hard to come together as a team and make big strides in their improvements," said head cheer sponsor, Rita Maldonado.

The squad sees four returning cheerleaders and 11 beginners this year. Eight cheerleaders graduated this past May.

Amongst them is the only male cheerleader on the squad, Nicolas Coronado, who is also the face of Ace the Aggie mascot.

"We've had male cheerleaders since Marco Garcia was a freshman, and he just graduated this year, so it's been four years," said Maldonando.

Poteet cheer is the only school in the county who has male cheerleaders on their squad, and they are proud of it.

"Having males on our squad really helps with our stunts. Hopefully we can get more boys interested in trying out in the future."

The PHS cheer squad has many fun and exciting events planned for the upcoming school year including their Meet the Aggies Pep Rally, Pink Out Pep Rally and Homecoming Community Pep Rally.
