(Ottumwa, IA)- The Ottumwa High School Cheerleading Team traded in the pompoms for some paintbrushes this week, in order to raise some money.
"Today and the rest of this week we are out painting pawprints as the OHS cheerleaders. We're going around town putting pawprints in different locations at houses or local businesses," said Josie Young, a rising junior at OHS.
Bright and early yesterday morning, at 6 am to be exact, these girls were painting the first of many pawprints. The team had roughly 120 houses and businesses this year, painting small and large prints, raising money for their team.
"So the money that we raised has been used for uniforms or the paint for next years pawprints," said Young.
"And warmups which is like sweatpants and our jackets and cheer poms and a new mat," said Ariel Altheide, a rising sophomore at OHS.
It's more than just paint on a driveway though, these prints truly represent the strong Ottumwa pride.
"It shows our bulldog spirit. From Ottumwa, work for the school district and it's a great thing to show the pride of Ottumwa," said Kim Lemonds.
Open gym workouts have already begun for the team and this gave them another opportunity to get together, with a change of scenery.
"I think it's a good bonding activity because like for the upcoming freshmen and if you've never done cheerleading at the High School before you have the opportunity to make friends with the people," said Altheide.
"So this is actually my first year cheering so like this whole thing is very new to me but like she said since it's my first year I get to know her since she did it from last year and she gives me tips and stuff like that on to like and then I can give them on my senior year on to the freshmen," said Joaly Andrade, a rising junior at OHS.
The first day of school, August 23rd will also be the first football scrimmage. The Bulldogs will take on Oskaloosa at Schafer Stadium.
