The Autoland Classic's Union County All-Star cheerleading squad might be smaller than in year's past, but there are quite a few girls who are participating for the second and third time.
Coach Alexis Jacqueney, who coaches at New Providence, returns along with Governor Livingston coach Emily Stecher for their second stint as Union County coaches. Jacqueney said that there are cheerleaders from New Providence, Governor Livingston, Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Dayton, Union, Elizabeth and Plainfield, and eight of them are returning veterans.
"It's great, we have a smaller team this year unfortunately, not that many schools are represented which is very unfortunate, but we do have an amazing group of girls, they're really talented," Jacqueney said. "Union didn't do it last year but they came this year and they (Kyasia Mallary-Burns, Jalynn White and Kayla Daniels) are a phenomenal group."
This year's Autoland Classic will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Kean University. All proceeds from the contest, which has raised more than $682,000 since its inception 26 years ago, benefit Children's Specialized Hospital and the Edison-based Lakeview School, a program of the New Jersey Institute for Disabilities.
Middlesex County leads the series 15-10 and has won 10 of the past 13 games. Six of the past 14 meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less. Middlesex County snapped a two-game losing skid with a 22-6 victory last summer.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood's Gianna Cassara was chosen for the third-straight year. She started as a sophomore and her experience three years ago made such an impact on her that she wanted to keep participating.
"The first year my coach was actually the coach of the team, so a lot of girls from my school did it and being a sophomore I was really nervous but all of the girls, every year they're very welcoming so every year we become so close," Cassara said. "We don't have that much time for practice but we become so close it feels like we've been together for years. The girls are awesome and to cheer with girls who are on the same level as me makes me work harder because it shows me what I can become because some of the girls are really, really good."
There are 19 cheerleaders on the Union County squad with New Providence's Jessica Cronin and Devon Everton, Governor Livingston's Amanda Anthenelli, Lexi Gonnelli, Danielle Aiello and Nicole Tomich and Dayton's Serafima Kardonova participating for the second time.
"They are definitely a hilarious group. They're too much, it's as if they've known each other forever," Jacqueney said. "Knowing how Union County is so diverse and from the very beginning they were very eager to get to know one another. We had a little huddle section and we gave our names and schools and what year they were and where they were going to college or planning to go, and they were all very supportive of one another and proud to be in a group with one another."
Cassara said that she prefers having a smaller cheerleading team because every school gets to teach their cheer, so having a smaller group makes it easier to learn the routines.
"It's almost nicer that's it a smaller group because we get to take more time getting to know each other," Cassara said. "Each school gets to teach their cheer so instead of having to learn a million cheers we got to do just a few of them, so I prefer a smaller group because we get to know each other much better."
Along with getting to cheer in the summer, the main reason Cassara said she wanted to keep coming back was because of the Union County team's visit to the Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.
"The first year I went it totally blew my mind just to see the kids, but it totally made me want to come back and do it again," she said. "Helping them makes me feel like I'm doing my part for the world, it's so cool that you get to meet people from different towns and you're doing it for a good cause and in the summer it's something to do."
With only a few days left until kickoff, the Union County squad is working hard to perfect its cheers and routines, and Cassara said everything is starting to fall into place.
"So far I think we're looking pretty good," Cassara said. "There are a few cheers that are a different style that some of us aren't used to, but the dance is almost done and there are a few new lifts and surprises that we haven't done in the past so it's going to be pretty exciting to watch."
