VINELAND – John Frangipani, the school district assistant superintendent for administration, is stepping down after five years with the district.

The school board approved his resignation during Wednesday's meeting.

"I can't express my gratitude to you and everyone in Vineland for the opportunity you have given me to finish out my career here," Frangipani wrote in a May 2 letter to Superintendent Mary Gruccio, noting he would miss the camaraderie of the administrative team.

His last day is Aug. 30, 2019, but Frangipani offered to assist with any transition. No date was given for posting the vacancy.

The board also approved superintendent recommendations for administrative transfers and hires.

Melanie Lovisone, the principal assigned to oversee the Title I funds, is moving to Mennies Elementary School to fill an opening due to Lisa Arena's retirement. The grant money budgeted for Lovisone's $115,782 salary will be reallocated to district educational programs. Oversight of the title grants will become the responsibility of Nate Frey, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, who will work with district principals.

Kristina Craig, the assistant principal of the Applied Math and Science Academy, is moving into a slot at Rossi Intermediate School held by a long-term assistant principal substitute. Craig, with an annual salary of $113,154, starts the new job on July 1.

A proposal to transfer Juanita Davis, the principal of the Sabater Elementary School Annex with an annual salary of $133,569, to the AMSA was pulled from the agenda after a board closed session.

Paul Farinaccio steps up into the district's director of maintenance service role, replacing the retiring Wayne Weaver. He begins the $155,000 position on July 1.

VHS Dance instructor N'Talia Wilson was named head cheerleading coach for the fall season with a stipend of $7,253. She replaces former coach Alena Blizzard, who had held the position for eight years. Several cheerleaders urged the school board to stay with Blizzard, noting her advanced training in cheerleading technique and safety.  Blizzard also offered practice space at her Blizz All-Star Cheer & Dance gym.

Eileen Bosco, VHS Marching Band director, voiced her support for Wilson, noting the growing collaboration between the band and dance performances.

Commending the cheerleaders for voicing their opinion, board members opted to support Wilson, who was recommended by Gruccio and VHS principal Suzette DeMarchi.

Board president Scott English noted the assistant cheerleading coach spot remains vacant suggesting there might be a possible compromise.

The school board approved a 10-cent increase in school lunch prices, that will not affect those enrolled in free or reduced lunch programs.

Jeff Martine, a former VHS class president and a now a long-term district teaching substitute, called out social media posts about the school lunch price hike noting "the total disrespect and disregard for students receiving free or reduced lunch."

"Seeing our students who receive a decreased lunch price demonized because of their families' economic situation and being portrayed as freeloaders is more than I could bear," he told the board, noting for some students the school lunch is their only hot meal of the day.

"They are not cheating the system, they are trying to survive," Martine said, urging the district to continue to provide stability for hungry children. "I'm not sure when eating food became a privilege and not a right that should be enjoyed by each student every single day.."
