Independence police are searching for five people who stole high-dollar fireworks from a fireworks stand in the parking lot of Price Chopper at 42nd Street and Noland Road.Sales from the fireworks stand benefits Surveillance video caught the break-in on camera."This tent is secure at night. The flaps are down, the exits are all blocked off," said Jennifer Raines, of Independence Pop Warner Cheer.Just before 1 a.m. Wednesday, several people sneaked into the tent and headed for the high-dollar fireworks."They had one $450 big box and the $850 big box," Raines said.Security was alerted to all the commotion."As soon as the security guy came out, the guy dropped the big box, pointed a gun at him, and they ran off with the other box," Raines said.The cash register was untouched."I was actually shocked because, you know, it's a charity thing," she said.Proceeds from the sales are going to the Child Abuse Prevention Association and for Pop Warner cheerleaders."First of all, it's stealing from CAPA, which is just pathetic," Raines said. "It's sad to steal from kids who might not be in the most economic-advantaged position."Anyone who recognizes the thieves is asked to contact the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline.
