Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame
It's been over two months since Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, and blew the collective minds of the fandom. The Russo Brothers surpassed even Infinity War in regards to scope and box office appeal, and Endgame's wild events like the Time Heist and final battle resulting in a blockbuster that was begging to be re-watched. Plenty of fans did just that, helping the movie become the second most profitable release of all time, trailing just behind James Cameron's Avatar.
But Marvel Studios is making one last effort to get that #1 spot in film history, and is doing so by re-releasing Avengers: Endgamewith additional footage. It's a last push that will likely bring Endgame past Avatar's total profit, especially as it arrives just before Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters. Now Captain America himself is encouraging the fans to run back to theaters, as Chris Evans posted on social media:
Chris Evans' may have hung up his shield for good with Avengers: Endgame, but he remains one of the MCU's biggest cheerleaders. And he wants to make sure the hardcore fandom gets back in theaters to these this new version of The Russo Brothers' massive blockbuster.
Chris Evans regularly uses social media to directly communicate with Marvel fans, as well as the general public. So when Avengers: Endgame's re-release date and emotional new poster were released, Cap took to Twitter to encourage us all to head back to theaters. Fans are eager for any information about the MCU after Endgame's release, and new footage and/or post-credits scenes could provide just that.
Avengers: Infinity War changed the MCU forever, when Josh Brolin's Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half of all life. Endgame picked up on that narrative, including a five year time gap. Ultimately the Avengers were able to snap everyone back into existence, but the shared universe is now repopulated with the vanished, and there's no telling what's to come next in Phase Four.
Indeed, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a complete mystery, as Kevin Feige and company are focused on the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home before, which will be the final installment in Phase Three. That's part of what makes Avengers: Endgame's re-release so appealing, as it has the potential to tease the future of the franchise-- especially when it comes to post-credits scenes.
Endgame surprised the fandom by not including any credits scenes. Instead, the cast of the MCU were given an epic curtain call. And when the credits stopped running, there was no extra scene tagged on. Instead, the movie's ending was given the chance to sit with the audience.
As it currently stands, Avengers: Endgame is $30 million and change behind Avatar's total worldwide gross. And while it's steadily been losing steam at the box office, the re-release will likely be the last step to possibly toppling that record. But with stars like Chris Evans helping to lead the charge, things may be looking up.
Avengers: Endgame's re-release will arrive June 28th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
