CAMDEN — Camden-Frontier High School senior Bethany Harris hadn't heard of Cornerstone University until she started looking into colleges she might want to attend after she graduates this spring.

But once she began researching the school, which included a brief stay on campus, she liked what she saw.

"I had never heard of Cornerstone University until they sent me mail, but when I went there for my tour I fell in love with it," Harris said. "Then, when I went to cheer tryouts and I was with the team, they really accepted me and that was pretty fun."

Harris will be attending the independent Christian college this fall, after the soon-to-be graduate signed a letter of intent Friday to attend the university and join the Golden Eagles' cheerleading squad.

It's a dream come true for the senior, who excelled at sideline cheer while a student at Camden-Frontier, and recounts game days among her favorite memories at the school.

"Game days were so exciting, because the boys play with so much intensity," Harris said. "And my teammates and cheer coach I'm also going to miss because they were always there for me."

Fortunately for her, her new academic home will allow her to continue with the sport she loves while furthering her education. It's a perfect match, says Harris, who adds that the university feels like the right fit for her academically.

It's also great, she says, because she can continue basing on the Golden Eagle team.

"I'm a base, so I get to continue that and I'm really excited about that," Harris said. "I've done some back spotting, but I'm really more comfortable as a base."

Cornerstone's cheer coach Kris Parker attended the Friday signing, where she expressed her excitement about Harris joining the university team.

"We're super excited that she has basing experience," Parker said. "We're seeking to develop our team and strengthen our team with her skills. She's a three or four sport athlete, so we're really excited about what that brings."

"She's going to be cheering at a higher level and the collegiate cheerleading experience is a more demanding athletic experience than the high school level, and so we're excited to strengthen her skills and build on the skills she's already gained from cheering here."

Harris's parents, Brian and Sarah, were also present, along with several of Harris's teammates and friends. Sarah Harris said she's proud of her daughter's achievements, and believes that she made the right choice in picking Cornerstone for the next step in her academic and athletic journey.

"We're overjoyed that she's chose Cornerstone, it's a really good school," Sarah Harris said. "She's going to be at a Christian university, and it's really exciting that the cheerleading team has accepted her, I know she's really proud of that."
