Rockford Lutheran didn't have to look far to find the new leader of its competitive cheerleading program.

Alyssa Schmidt, a former Lutheran cheerleader and an assistant to previous head coach Billie Makeever, was named the high school's new director of cheerleading and varsity head coach.

Schmidt said he she's excited about her new position and the opportunity to build on the success that Makeever had with the program.

"I have worked alongside Coach Makeever for many years," Schmidt said in a news release. "She was a wonderful mentor to me, and I am excited to continue the legacy she has built for the Rockford Lutheran Cheerleading Program. I look forward to the upcoming season."

The Crusaders advanced to state all four years Makeever was the head coach, and won the program's first state championship in the small team division in 2017. Makeever, who retired in March, assisted athletic director Josh Sternquist in the selection process, which led to Schmidt.

"She has experience as a member of our program and as a leader," Sternquist said in the news release. "Alyssa knows what it takes and has grown up under the tutelage of Coach Billie Makeever. We are excited to get going and see our team participate in the community and perform."
