The second season of the teen drama saw Tyler Down (Devin Druid) brutally sexually assaulted, as Montgomery de la Cruz (Timothy Granaderos) sodomised him with a mop handle. The scene was met with disgust by a number of viewers.

Now, speaking to The Radio Times, Winters has said she understands why the scene caused so much controversy, admitting that she'll never watch it again.

"It was very graphic. I could barely watch it honestly," she said. "It was very disturbing. I could see how that provoked a lot of controversy to be honest.

"At the same time I love being on a show that has so much controversy because it's in everyone's line of conversation, and everyone's talking about it. I think that's great. But that was crazy: that scene is definitely one that I will not watch again."

Amid the controversy, series creator Brian Yorkey defended the scene, saying that he hopes it will lead to people having discussions about bullying.
