A pair of Savannah golfer advanced to the Final Four in the Senior Match Play Championship held Thursday at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta.

Top seed Danny Nelson of Savannah remains alive after defeating No. 16 seed Larry Vaughan of Greensboro 4-and-3 and No. 8 seed James Kiely of Milton 3-and-2. Nelson will face defending champion and No. 5 seed Jack Hall of Savannah, who took down No. 12 seed Ricky Tucker of Tifton 5-and-3 and No. 4 seed Rusty Strawn of McDonough 3-and-2.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed Bob Royak of Alpharetta will take on No. 6 seed Allen Peake of Macon. Royak defeated No. 15 seed Toshi Hirata of Pooler 3-and-2 and won 3-and-2 over No. 7 seed Scotty Scott of Hoschton in the quarterfinals. Peake picked wins over No. 11 seed John Foster of Woodstock in 20 holes and No. 14 seed Frank Remmes of Lilburn 1-up on his way to the semifinals.

Kennesaw State hires

UGA's Abdur-Rahim as coach

ATLANTA — Kennesaw State has hired Georgia assistant Amir Abdur-Rahim as the Owls' men's basketball coach.

Abdur-Rahim is making the in-state move after agreeing to a four-year contract. The hiring was announced on Thursday by Kennesaw State athletic director Milton Overton.

For Abdur-Rahim, the new job is a return home. He is a graduate of Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia, in the same Cobb County as Kennesaw State.

Abdur-Rahim spent one season on first-year coach Tom Crean's staff at Georgia following four years as an assistant at Texas A&M and two years at the College of Charleston. He also worked five years at Murray State and one season as Georgia Tech's director of player development.

The city of Savannah, Parks and Recreation Department Athletics Division, will conduct a cheerleading instructor tryout at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Alee Temple Bill Porter Room. The Alee Temple is located off of Skidaway Road and across from the Allen Paulson Softball Complex.

Instructed high school varsity cheerleaders must be 16 years old to try out and bring a copy of their birth certificate. Cheerleaders selected will be instructors at the 2019 Summer Cheerleading Sports Camp.

Registration is open for the camp for children ages 5-15. Register weekdays at the Paulson Softball Complex at 7171 Skidaway Road.

Four sessions are June 3-6, 10-13, 17-20 and 24-27. Session 4 includes the Georgia Games. Sessions are at the Alee Temple from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday.

The cost is $45 per child for city residents, $50 for non-residents, for sessions 1, 2 and 3. Session 4 is $50/$55. Lunch is provided.
