Local cheerleaders prepare to go to D2 Summit
Liberty Athletic Center, a local cheerleading training facility, is proud to announce that four of the Liberty All Star teams have been selected to compete at one of the nation's most prestigious cheerleading competitions for small gyms, The D2 Summit, produced by Varsity All Star.
Held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort May 10-12, The D2 Summit is the season-capping goal for many competitive All Star teams. Gyms that compete in Division 2 (or D2) only train 125 athletes or less annually, modeled on Division II universities that tend to have fewer students than Division I schools. The 2018 D2 Summit showcased over 1,000 teams and 24,000 competitors from across the United States.
"Teams competing at The D2 Summit must receive a bid at a prior competition to be eligible to participate," says Brian Elza, co-general manager for Varsity All Star, which is comprised of multiple All Star competition brands under the Varsity Spirit umbrella. "That's what makes The D2 Summit so rewarding for the competitors. If they don't climb their way to the top throughout their season, they won't make it to The Summit."
All Star cheerleading is a discipline that is open to all ages and skill levels. "We like to think of all star cheerleading as the most inclusive sport available to young athletes. The D2 Summit provides a place for all of them to shine," adds Tres LeTard, co-general manager for Varsity All Star.

Virginia man convicted of concealing daughter's remains
Travis Plummer, 38, of Richmond, Va., was convicted April 9 by a Hudson County jury on one count of Unlawful Concealment of Human Remains after his daughter's body was found in a suitcase left beside the PATH train tracks. The trial began on April 1.
According to a statement from the Hudson County prosecutor's office, the evidence at trial established that Te'Myah Layauna Plummer, born on May 19, 2016, died at some point late in the summer of 2017 and that the defendant thereafter concealed her body in a suitcase which he brought to Jersey City on Nov.1, 2017, and then hid in a garage for four months.
In March 2018, Plummer dumped the suitcase off the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge, just off Broadway in Jersey City, onto the side of the PATH train tracks below before fleeing to Miami and then Puerto Rico. Te'Myah's body was discovered by Port Authority employees.
JCMC opens new primary care hub in JC
Barnabas Health Medical Group and Jersey City Medical Center have announced the addition of Pavonia Primary Care, its newest primary and specialty care center, located in Journal Square, 600 Pavonia Ave., second floor, in Jersey City. Four primary care physicians will be available to offer convenient, comprehensive health care services at the accessible Journal Square location. Primary care physicians include Sreevani Thota, MD; Saquiba Sayed, MD, and Carolina Medrano Mendez, MD.
The providers will offer annual physical exams, laboratory testing, immunizations and vaccinations such as the flu shot, they will diagnose and treat common medical problems, discuss healthy lifestyle choices and refer patients to medical specialists when necessary.
The facility will be open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Street parking is available as well as public parking in nearby lots available at a discounted price for patients.

Document surcharge will benefit homeless
At its April 11 meeting, the Board of Freeholders approved a resolution in support of a $2 increase in the surcharge for document recording which will benefit the Hudson County Homelessness Trust Funds.
The increase was approved by the legislature and signed by Gov. Phil Murphy in March 2019.
The board is expected to increase the amount of funds collected per recorded document to any amount up to $10, which would greatly expand funding for much needed services to homeless individuals. County officials hope an increase in local funds through the passage of this bill will be beneficial to assist in eradicating homelessness.
Girls Scouts won't need license to sell cookies
At its April 10 meeting, the Jersey City Council approved a resolution that would exempt girl scouts from having to comply with city licensing requirements over the sale of cookies.
The city requires licenses for anyone selling cookies to the public at the time of sale, and another license for later delivery. The sale of cookies by the Girl Scouts for delivery is exempt under state law. But the city recently learned that the Girl Scouts are planning to set up sales tables throughout the city, so the resolution would exempt them from having to obtain a license
Enrollment open for free preschool programs for low-income families
Enrollment is open for Greater Bergen Community Action (GBCA) Head Start and Early Head Start preschools, which are free federally-funded programs that serve the educational, psychological, and health needs of low-income children ages 0-5 in Jersey City.
GBCA Head Start programs adhere to both state and federal guidelines and are staffed with certified teachers, family workers, healthcare professionals and paraprofessionals, including registered dietitians, who help maintain the students' nutrition and offer classes for parents.
