Elk Grove High School named Shannon Evans, an assistant girls cheerleading coach and educator at Byrd Elementary School in Elk Grove, as the school's new head girls cheerleading coach.

Evans is eager to continue the successful tradition of Elk Grove cheerleading. She takes over for Danielle Damato who had a great run as head coach, qualifying for the IHSA state tournament each of the nine years she was head coach.

Damato took over as head coach from Jeff Siegal in 2011 and won a sectional title in 2015. Siegal led the team to state championships and sectional titles in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 in the coed division. Only Lemont has more state titles (6) than Elk Grove. The Grenadiers are one of 10 schools in state history to qualify for state all 14 seasons.

"Danielle will be greatly missed and we are so appreciative for all she gave to the program and the legacy she left," Elk Grove Assistant Principal for Student Activities Bob Murphy said. "We are excited that one of Danielle's former cheerleaders and assistant will keep the program moving in the right direction."

Elk Grove finished 18th at state in coed this past season.

Evans, a four-year varsity cheerleader and senior captain at Elk Grove, has served on the staff for three years — two as head JV coach and one year as a varsity assistant. Under her leadership, the program will represent sportsmanship, respect and competitiveness, according to Murphy.
