The Smoky Mountain Competition Cheer Club Senior Sapphires and Junior Diamonds both won championships in their division April 14 in Louisville, Kentucky. Both teams received invitation-only bids earlier in the season to the U.S. Finals Cheer and Dance Competition. They chose Louisville from eight cities across the United States. The cheer club was one of only two programs representing North Carolina. The Senior Sapphires (top) competed in the Senior Level 3.1 Performance Rec Division and received zero deductions for their performance. Their overall score was the highest received all season. Senior Sapphires include, from left: (front) Miley Holder, Emelyn Bumgarner; (middle) Aubrey McKeever, Lacilynn Pummer, Dacota Cameron, Haley Welch; (back) Samantha Tilley, Ashley Clark, Kayla Evans, Taylor Broom and Kendra Hall. The Junior Diamonds (bottom) competed in the Junior Level 1 Performance Rec Division and received zero deductions for their performance. Each cheerleader from both groups received a medal and a unique white jacket given only at the U.S. Finals competitions. Junior Diamonds include, from left: (front) Zayda Dewantara, Shayla Dewantara; (back) Brinley Griffin, Isabela Chapa, Hailey Broom and Reyna Huerta. Crossover cheerleaders who participate with both groups and aren't pictured include: Ashley Clark, Dacota Cameron, Taylor Broom, Emelyn Bumgarner and Haley Welch. Both teams advance to the Champions Challenge with divisional winners from all eight locations across the United States in virtual competition against each other. The routines will be reviewed by a new set of judges and a new score given. The winners of the Champions Challenge will be announced in late May, and each cheerleader from the winning teams will receive unique champion rings. The club will be hosting a cheerleading clinic Sunday, June 2, at the Cullowhee Recreation Center gym. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. with the clinic from 2-5 p.m. Cost is $20 per cheerleader. Open tryouts for the 2019-20 season will also be held at this time. No previous cheerleading experience is required, although it is recommended.
