Tuesday night's meeting of the Cullman City School Board featured recognitions for some of the teachers and students who have won awards or represented the school system in state and national competitions.
The 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year from Cullman City Primary School was Allison Bates, East Elementary's Teacher of the Year was Kelly Thrasher, and Salena Mayberry was the Teacher of the Year from West Elementary School and was the Elementary Teacher of the Year for the system.
Kylie Bates was the Teacher of the Year from Cullman Middle School, and Cullman High School's John Drake was the school's Teacher of the Year and the system's Secondary Teacher of the Year.
"We are so very proud of all these teachers and all their hard work and extra hours and just the love and heart they pour into our students and our schools," said Board Member Joey Orr.
Several students were also recognized for their art prowess, including West Elementary's Max Scosyrev, who placed second in the Alabama Arbor Day Poster Contest, along with the Cullman City Primary School and Cullman High School students who had their art placed in the State Superintendent's Visual Art exhibit. Ayuka Schichinohe was also recognized for placing first in the painting category at the 2019 Congressional Art Competition.
The system's winners and finalists at the HOSA-Future Health Professionals State Competition were also recognized by the board for their performance.
Musical and athletic participants also received their share of recognition during the meeting, as the members of the Alabama All State Choir and Band were recognized by the board, and members of the cheerleading team received recognition for winning the 2018 AHSAA 6A Cheerleading Championship, being 2019 National High School Cheerleading Championship qualifiers and for placing fourth at the National High School Cheerleading Competition.
"As you can see, we have so many things from the fine arts to athletics to academics that we have to be proud of in our students in Cullman City Schools," Orr said.
The board also approved an increase in nonresident fees for the 2019-2020 school year. The fee for one student will increase from $800 to $850, and the fee for two or more students will increase from $1,400 to $1,500.
In other business, the board:
- Approved March 2019 payroll of $1,998,426.50, invoices paid of $254,210.28, financial statements and bank reconciliations.
- Approved the following Head Start items: Expenditures Report for March 2019, Health/Nutrition/Disabilities/Enrollment Report for March 2019.
- Gave permission for Cullman High School FCCLA to attend the FCCLA National Cluster Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California to compete in the National STAR Events competition and leadership meetings and tours on June 27 through July 5.
- Gave permission for Cullman Middle School eighth grade Beta Club to travel to Civil War battle sites in Franklin, Tennessee on May 1.
- Gave permission for Cullman High School archery team to attend the National Archery Competition in Louisville, Kentucky on May 9-11.
- Gave permission to surplus/salvage a 2016 Toro 3000 series 60-inch lawnmower with E-Z bagger and a Toro Reelmaster 200D reel mower at Cullman High School.
- Gave permission to salvage a Dell desktop computer at Cullman City Head Start.
- Gave permission to salvage the following 2008 textbooks from Cullman High School: McDougall Littell "Discovering French 1 Bleu," 50 copies with one set of ancillaries; McDougal Littel "Discovering French 2 Blanc," 66 copies with a partial set of ancillaries; McDougal Littel "Discovering French 3 Rouge," 16 copies with a partial set of ancillaries; Holt, Rinehart, Winston "Spanish 2 Expersate," 65 copies with partial set of ancillaries; "Spanish 1 Experesate," 72 copies with a partial set of ancillaries.
- Gave permission to bid #04-16-19-01 and accept the lowest responsible bidder for occupational and physical therapy services.
- Gave permission to contract with Stephen Ward & Associates for the Cullman Middle School Round Building Roof Prepair Project.
- Passed a resolution to engage Raymond James and Associates, Inc. as underwriter and Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP as bond counsel.
- Approved the four-day summer work schedule beginning June 3 through July 26.
- Approved the LEA Interagency Agreement between Cullman City Child Development (Head Start) and Cullman City Board of Education.
- Approved the 2019-2020 Cullman City Head Start School Calendar.
- Approved the 2019-202 Cullman City Head Start Pre-K School Calendar.
- Approved the following Cullman City Head Start Community Partnership Agreements: Cullman County Public Library, Good Samaritan Health Clinic, The Link, United Way.
- Gave permission to contract with Margaret Baker to provide special education services on an as-needed basis beginning May 27 through July 31 (IDEA funds).
- Gave permission to contract with Lori Andrews to provide special education services on an as-needed basis beginning May 27 through July 31 (IDEA funds).
- Gave permission to contract with Cody Culpepper to assist with various maintenance duties on an as-needed basis beginning Jan. 1 through May 31.
- Gave permission to contract with Leigh Hempfling to provide office duties, including summer enrollment at West Elementary School beginning June 3 through July 26 (local school funds).
- Gave permission to contract with Amber Hembree to provide counseling duties during the summer of 2019 (central office funds).
