SHOW LOW — Last Tuesday, the Show Low City Council proclaimed March 18-22 as Show Low Cougar Cheerleading State Championship Week in the City of Show Low.

"Thank you for representing our community with excellence," Mayor Daryl Seymore told the team during the meeting.

The proclamation is in honor of Show Low High School's 15-member Spiritline team who earned their seventh State Championship Cheerleading/Pom Tournament. This is also the team's fourth consecutive state title.

The Cougar Cheerleaders competed against more than 200 other teams on February 15 in the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.

In addition, they were the first team in the White Mountains and Northern Arizona area to qualify for a national competition spot in Anaheim, California.

"The team qualified for nationals following their outstanding performance in the state championship," says Show Low Junior High Academic Advisor Heather Alsobrook.

On February 21-22, they competed in the nationals. "They took fifth place in the nation against heavy competition from around the United States," adds Alsobrook.

Great coaches make great teams

These athletes have a strong coaching team led by head coach DeeAnn Moya. Supporting her efforts are coaches Rachel Walker and Gabe Moya.

"This is my ninth year in the school and my fourth year as head coach," coach Moya told the council. "The girls are exemplary — and not just in their sport of cheerleading."

"They spend a minimum of 20 hours a week practicing together," Moya added. "They are like sisters. Everything about them is amazing and they have every right to stand up here as champions."

"I don't want to take anything away from these exceptional students," added councilman Gene Kelley, "but when championships are earned year after year, you've got a thing."

"There is also something exceptional about these three coaches," added Kelley.

"This unbelievable year would not have been possible without our sponsors, amazing booster club and the exemplary attitudes and work ethic of the athletes on our team," added Coach Walker. "They showed true perseverance throughout a difficult season and we couldn't be happier with our results! We are looking forward to more hard work in the future!"
