Roger Clemens and Texas' Cheerleaders Lead a Rousing UT Party in One Unforgettable Houston Night - PaperCity Magazine

March 27, 2019 at 06:00AM

What: The University of Texas annual Texas Exes Houston chapter scholarship dinner

Where: River Oaks Country Club, bleeding orange all night long

PC Moment: UT spirit resonated throughout the country club ballroom as the UT Orange (cheer) Squad bopped in from Austin to start this evening off with a bang, leading the throng of more than 250 Longhorn supporters in the Texas fight song. It closed with a rousing group sing-along of "The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You." In between, there was plenty of orange-blooded action as former Longhorns baseball great Roger Clemens was honoree.

The video highlighting Clemens' 24 season career and spotlighting his many honors received a standing ovation as did his one-on-one interview with longtime sports broadcaster Bill Worrell (Houston Rockets television play-by-play announcer). When the interview concluded, Clemens had a special, if facetious, announcement — he was coming out of retirement. He then showed a hilarious video of him as an old old man talking to the Yankees in 2057 about pitching again.

Also taking the microphone were Texas Exes Houston chapter president Lewis Kasner, Texas Exes executive director Chuck Harris and Travis Arnold, who shared his inspiring story of receiving a UT scholarship from Texas Exes after his recovery from a cancer diagnosis.

The Houston chapter serves the 50,000 Texas Exes living in Houston and each year provides more than 30 scholarships to deserving students.
