CLARKSBURG, W.Va. - A one-time Harrison County cheerleading and gymnastics coach has been sentenced to 4 years, 3 months in prison for a federal child pornography charge, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

Jeremy Smith, 37, of Clarksburg, pleaded guilty to one count of child pornography in October 2018. The U.S. Attorney's Office said Smith admitted to possessing images of children under the age of 12 in March 2018 in Harrison County.

The case is prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as identify and rescue victims, officials said.
