HENRIETTA - One of the greatest honors that can be bestowed upon a Section V Basketball player is being selected for Rochester's annual Ronald McDonald House All-Star Game. Each year, the game puts on display the highest-level of high school basketball that can be seen within Section V at any given point throughout the season, as the section's best of the best senior athletes take the floor during March in hopes of not only providing great entertainment, but also to benefit a great cause.
The mission of the Ronald McDonald House is to provide temporary lodging for families who have children that have been stricken with serious illnesses. The RMH All-Star game generates funds to aid in the House's effort, with all proceeds benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester.
The Ronald McDonald House helps near 1,000 families and children annually. Beginning in 1986, RMH All-Star Game has raised over $350,000.
The teams, which includes a cheerleading lineup, are picked by Section V coaches and administrators. The event is organized with the help of volunteers from many different organizations, including the Rochester District Basketball Officials Board 60, the Central Western Girls Basketball Organization, as well as others throughout Section V.
This year's game featured five local athletes, as Caledonia-Mumford's Elyse Van Auken and Keshequa's Payton Powers were selected to participate on the girls side, while on the boys side, Mt. Morris' Cam Regal, Way-Coh's Connor Englert, and Avon's Connor Taylor also participated.
The red team beat the gold team in the girls game, 87-70. Van Auken and Powers each finished with two points for the gold team.
Regal and Englert helped lead the red team to a 135-132 victory in the boys game, with Regal scoring 6 points and Englert 5 points. Taylor scored 11 points for the gold squad.
Two local cheerleaders were named to the Ronald McDonald House Squad this season — Letchworth's Brianna Dake and Keshequa's Taylor Martin. Le Roy's Jamie Turman was one of the two coaches.
The "fork" ratings are based primarily on food quality and preparation, with service and atmosphere factored into the final decision. Reviews are based on one unsolicited, unannounced visit to the restaurant.
