50 Years Ago — March 13, 1969Charette, Best Speller — Margaret Charette, 14, an eighth-grade student at Market Street School, won the Fort Kent town spelling bee. The Fort Kent champ will represent Fort Kent in the SAD 27 finals March 20 at Pleasant Street School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Charette.Madawaska Home Ec Girls Visit Factory — Members of Mrs. Marie Novack's freshmen home economics class inspected a garment that they saw made from beginning to end last Saturday. The girls went on a field trip with their teacher to the Madawaska Weavers in St. Leonard, N.B.25 Years Ago — March 16,1994 Rod Steps Down —Rod MacWhinnie of Madawaska is not running for re-election to the Madawaska School Committee. He was presented with a plaque on behalf of the parents, teachers and administrators of the Madawaska School Department at the committee's February meeting, MacWhinnie's last as a board member.Hip-Hip, Hooray — Cheerleading has returned to St. Francis Elementary School. Under the able direction of Shirlee Connors-Carlson, several girls in grades 5 to 8 joined the cheerleading squad. They had only a limited amount of practice time prior to the first game but they delivered a fine performance.Having cheerleaders on the floor was a welcome addition to our home games and their effort was greatly appreciated.10 Years Ago — March 18, 2009First-ever Water Derby Net Winners –– Ron Brown, Mike and Austin Lebreck were the big winners in the first-ever Border Water Ice Fishing Derby in Van Buren. For the first time, ice-fishing enthusiasts were able to fish the border waters of the St. John River from the Van Buren bridge to the Hamlin Port. The Van Buren Chamber of Commerce took advantage of the new law that opened these waters to winter ice fishing and hosted its first annual Border Water Ice Fishing Derby.Thank you for reading your 4 free articles this month.
