Senior Tayler Kraut didn't believe it at first.

Fellow senior Lexie Vlahos was shocked as well.

It took awhile for it to sink in – the Cody cheerleading team finished fourth March 6 in the 3A All Girls Stunt division at the state meet in Casper for the first time in the careers of the co-captains.

Only the top four teams in each category are announced and receive trophies. The last two years the Fillies were seventh.

"The last three years we haven't done that great, so it's nice to go out with a bang," Kraut said. "Fourth place is the best we've done, so I'm very happy with it and how our team performed."

Cody finished with 73.55 points, ahead of fifth-place Powell that scored a 72.6.

"All of us were just kind of shocked at first," Vlahos said. "It was exciting."

The top three teams in the category were Mountain View (85.2), Cokeville (75.9) and Rocky Mountain (74.7).

It was a new category for Cody, which last year competed in the non-stunting category.

Last year the girls and their coach felt they had improved over the year before, but their state placing didn't reflect it.

So this year they redoubled their efforts and it paid off in the state meet.

"They had a phenomenal performance with zero deductions," coach Brittany Schumacher said.

To get the performance down pat, the team committed to stunts early. Stunting focuses more on the technical and athletic components of cheer.

"This year we knew we were going to do stunts. We knew we had to get qualifications to do it," Kraut said. "So we had girls practice stunting. It was a little bit more nerve wracking, a little more difficult. But I thought it was great practicing it and doing it."

The team did stunts last year, but weren't ready to perform stunting at state.

"The team has been working hard all year in stunting to be competitive in the stunting category," Schumacher said.

For the state competition Cody performed a cheer stunt, main stunt, basket toss and pyramid.

The Fillies were the first team in their division to perform their routine Wednesday night.

Kraut said going first had its plusses and minuses.

"I think I like being first," she said. "We did what we could do, now we get to see what everybody else does."

"This fourth place win for Cody was a huge improvement from previous years," Schumacher said. "As a coach, I am extremely proud of this team and to see their hard work pay off is very rewarding."
